Who was Jesus Barabbas?
>>1683013
Probably the same figure as Jesus of Nazareth who was later split apart by the Gospel writers in order to manufacture a bizarre and completely uncorroborated set of circumstances (passover pardon, funny how there's no independent verification of a custom like this) to shift blame for the death of Jesus away from Rome and towards the Jews.

Are you basing this on personal conjecture, or some critical, academic argument?

I'm mostly basing it on Hyam Maccoby's work, if that's what you're asking. The actual cut and thrust supporting it would be far, far longer than I could cram into a 4chan post, but if you're interested, I would recommend Revolution in Judea. But that is his ultimate conclusion, that "Jesus Barrabas" and "Jesus of Nazareth" were the same dude, and that a lot of distortions and uncorroborated bits of local "tradition" in the Gospels tend to make the Pharisees/Judean society at large less sympathetic, and the Romans more sympathetic.
