Ethiopia uses an calendar system derived from the ancient Egyptian calendar, and so holidays fall on different days in Ethiopia, including New Year, which is typically on September 11th. And yeah, it's a rough holiday to celebrate in the US.
Let's have a general Ethiopian history thread in celebration!

No intent to derail the thread but what does Judaism have to do with Ethiopia? Lots of Jamaicans say zion is in Ethiopia or something

I'm pretty sure it's based on a Rastafarian belief about one of Ethiopia's kings.

There are a Jewish people called Beta Israel in Ethiopia, but the main reason for the association is the belief, dating at least from the 14th century and probably much earlier, that the Ethiopian monarchy was descended from Solomon and Sheba through their son Menelik I, who unknowingly brought the Ark of the Covenant to Ethiopia while returning from a visit to Jerusalem, and that Ethiopia became the new Zion after Solomon turned to idol worship. Ethiopian Christians still believe the Ark of the Covenant is hidden under a church in Aksum. Haile Selassie being styled 'The Conquering Lion of Judah' especially caught attention from black Westerners.
