Considering Temujin grew up on the verge of poverty and then through sheer will united the majority of Mongol tribes into one kingdom under himself, Genghis Kahn... I'd say he was pretty powerful. His empire stretched from China to Afghanistan during his lifetime. After his death his heirs stretched his kingdom past the Caucuses and raided Kiev. While the father of the Mongol Horde, Genghis Kahn was also a successful leader to his conquered people. A Mongol written language flourished through his empire and codes of ethics such as no thievery and murder were enacted. Of course for every town spared, another village would feel his wrath. The craftsman would be spared to work in the empire while the children and women were sold into slavery, the rest of the men would be killed in order to snuff out thoughts of rebellion.
What makes a leader of an empire truly great is the ability to leave behind a system of succession for the good of the empire, and Genghis Kahn did just that. While not ruled as one, many different Kahns ruled and expanded the controlled terriotries after the death of Genghis Kahn. Rulers like Kubla Kahn (a nephew of Genghis Kahn) have stood the test of time because of the system Genghis Kahn set up.
Genghis Kahn is easily one of the powerful figures in all of history. The country of Mongolia is a direct result of his conquest, and the empire that he created went on to become the largest empire in existence. He easily ranks in the top of 5 of History's most memorable (for better or for worse) leaders/dictators/emperors. The list ofcourse being:
1. Alexander the Great
2.Julius Ceaser
3. Genghis Kahn
4. Napoleon
5. Hitler

Also keep in mind the Mongol Empire were nomads to the core. To them life was movement across the world. There are multiple of accounts of the Mongol Horde ravaging towns simply because they believed a gathering of people represented a defensive structure..the concept of a brike and mortar (well...more like mud and clay) town was foregien to them.
So much there are people who worship him to this day pic related its a genghis khan church
