Check out Montefiore and Khlevnuik on Stalin. Both are sliiightly biased, but amazing compendia of the first half of the Soviet Union's existence.
I studied history in Russian high school with this book, it's a good starter for understanding Russia from the point of a Russian student. I also used it when studying in Moscow State University. It's "The History of Russia" by A. S. Orlov. I suppose there must be an English translation
