What are the Bahais like? Are they a cult, the Islamic version of Mormons, or a bona fide religion?
Not very much like Mormons at all. Mormonism started as an updated version of Christianity and was founded by a man who was obviously a scam artist.
Baha Ulah seems like a much more sincere figure, and he started his religion out of more of a reinterpretation of religious history and religion. It's more like Unitarianism that noticed most religions talk about the same things and make an effort towards reconciling different faiths. Another way of putting it would be that Mormonism started out to correct Christianity, Baha'i started out as an effort to define a universal truth.

Ahmadiyyas are much more like Mormons, meaning they claim to be Muslims while hugely deviating from what is considered mainstream Islam.
Bahais aren't Muslims and never pretended to be ones. They are separate monotheistic religion. Their relationship with Islam is much like Islam's relationship with Christianity. Meaning, they claim to be completely new revelation while acknowledging the revelations given to Muhammad.

Regardless of what Smith's actually motivations were, he marketed his religion as the correct version of Christianity, as revealed to him. Whether or not you agree with that, it's what he was saying his religion was, and it's what modern Mormons still think their church is.
Baha'is have never claimed to be correcting a religion the way Mormons (or any other protestants, for that matter) have. It's always existed as a separate religion.

Even the Ahmadis are much closer to normal Muslims than, say, a Mormon would be to Christianity. Ahmadis retain strict monotheism.
