>"The great emperor of the Turks does with as great devotion as any prince in the world honour and observe the religion by him received from his ancestors, and yet detests he not the strange religions of others; but on the contrary permits every man to live according to his conscience: yes, and that more is, near unto his palace at Pera, suffers four diverse religions viz. that of the Jews, that of the Christians, that of the Grecians, and that of the Mahometans"

They get plenty of credit for it. It is part of why so many people defend the Turks. Forget about all the slavery and murder though. The Turks were tolerant so they were teh good guys!
When you're conquering and settling foreign lands being "tolerant" is a survival mechanism.
To the extent that the turks even were "inclusive and tolerant" it was for the sake of stability because they were too weak to completely subjugate the native inhabitants.

You do know the Ottoman Sultan is only called Sultan by later westerners yeah?
Guy was "Padishah" (Great King or Emperor) for the empire's denizens. In the aristocratic Persian tongue anyway.
