im going there (hertford) in october.

do you guys have as many traditions and ceremonies as people say?

what are the people like? im worried that they will all be poshtwats, even though a lady came in my school and said that was a myth.

any advice for freshers?

>>1631683
>Surely the most useful humanities subject there is?

ehhh, id say after classics (1) and history (2). though i dont now how that applies to oxford. i thought PPE was mainly "i want to work for the government".

>>1631742
do all past-papers twice. the test is super important.

i dont know about the TSA, but the test i did (Mathematics Aptitude Test) was out of 100, with a single mark being equivalent to an entire A* GSCE. I know the Physics one is similar.

good luck bub.

what are your AS results btw?

>>1632406

>>

I'm looking at going to Merton to do History next year

Anyone here sat a HAT before and can explain what it's like? Also general interview tips would be appreciated too.

>>1633692
Yeah it is, they actually have lower required grades than most top 10 unis because they can rely on the tests and interviews to screen people out.
>>
>>1633714
What about for Cambridge? You looked at there?
>>
>>1633692
what subjects? what course?

as i said >>1633452 the most important thing (if i can extrapolate from my experience) is the aptitude test. hence if you have shoddy gcse/as grades apply oxford rather than cambridge.

if you get an interview then thats probably the biggest factor as well.

i would apply. you've got 5 options (normally) so you might as well. "you miss 100% of the shots you dont take".

also, i hope other oxford guys chime in with actually knowledge -- i dont know shit, i only go there in october.

well done on your sick grades famalam and good luck with your a2's and applications :)
>>
>>1633714
correct interview tips are literally the cliches you expect. passion, know your books, know your personal statement, you dont need any specialist knowledge in your subject, think out-loud ect
>>
>>1633740
Cheers. It would be to do History.

My B at AS was also reformed/linear, which means it doesnt even go towards next year. I did English Lit, English Lang, Politics and History.
>>
>>1633750
also you should be able to speak about anything you mention on your personal statement for at least 5 minutes non stop.
>>
>>1633751
thats more than fine trust me. ive heard anecdotes of people being dissuaded from applying by their school. if they do, dont listen to them.

with a solid personal statement littered with books, and a good HAT score, you will slide in easy.

History and Archaeology at Birkbeck, UOL.. My university is pretty well known as being heaven for marxist historians thanks to having Hobsbawm as a lecturer until days before his fucking death. Also Slavoj *schniff schniff* Zizek. He rarely ever turns up and most of his stuff is subordinated to his lessers. He's more calm and reserved in real life though but when you get him into a proper discussion, the ziz whizz flies into action. The good thing about it all is that my uni is amongst the best in the world for my course subject and my tutors are predicting me a solid First for Year 3, as well as suggesting me to pursuit a Postgrad in Oxbridge/Russell Group unis. Will be applying to a wide array of things including a PGDIp in Nursing, Graduate Programs, PCGE, MPhil at Cam (doubting between an MPhil in Human Evolutionary Science or Biological Science), MSc in Genetics at Imperial and Edinburgh or MSc in Osteoarchaeology.

>>1633965
what college? any tips for getting onto the History course?
>>
>>1633893
i havent started but tbqhwuf i dont even mind a couple posh twats -- itll be interesting to see how the other half live -- as long as i have a couple poor-scum mates like me around. i find poor-scum who refuse to socialise with posh-twats just as bad as posh-twats who refuse to socialise with poor-scum. most of them are well read and pretty nice (if not a little naive but we have our faults as well).

(depending on the college) you self-accomodate in the 2nd or 3rd year - so keep that free rent offer open. if its large you can even stay with some mates and all pay cheap rent to your relative.

furthermore - i literally have never heard of people self-accomodating as a first year non-mature student. much more practical to have your tutorials in the same building you live in. also food is (normally) provided.

tldr; living in a flat is a stupid idea famalam

>>1633921

Good universities for History here are ofc Oxbridge, though quite a lot of people (inc me) don't like the structure or style of the teaching and course. For a more international/american style try London. If you can get LSE or UCL on your CV you will be in a great position to work internationally and in Europe.

Warwick and Durham have excellent history departments. Durham is toilet for econ and the Warwick econ dept is disintegrating so I would avoid WU at the moment. York, UCL, Bristol, and Exeter are nothing to sniff at for history either.

Ignore the Oxbridge trolls. It's a great experience for undergrad, but its not for everyone and there are plenty of superior universities in Europe and in the US.

The vast majority of colleges do not have any truly distinctive traditions or ceremonies. The reputation for pomp is really the result of the amalgamation of the colleges in the public perception of the university.

You will find just as many 'posh twats' at Oxford as you do in any other top-end university. But only a tiny minority of those take in pleasure in behaving like stereotypes. Most people, regardless of background worry about and take pleasure in the same parts of university and college life.

Yes - during your fresher's week go and familiarise yourself with the libraries. You will need to hit the ground running in First Week, and having spent fresher's in revelry, this is much easier said than done. So make some time for it before hand - check out SOLO and find out where the libraries relevant to you are. They are all scattered about town.

Would you say there is an academic establishment? As in the networking and connections formed at Oxbridge uni end up more important than the degrees themselves?

After my A-levels this year I will hopefully go to Oxford for PPE like the other anon. But while I am normal, and social, I am not some budding guy with hundreds of friends and contacts so I think I will only get a degree from the uni while others will get opportunities from their new friends.

None because I'm fugged anyways with a 2.0 GPA and average B,C,D grades along with a 20 on my ACT (first-time doing it)
>What course - Humanities or other?
I would probably pick History as my minor and some STEM field as my major if I WAS in uni.

I mean, I even have the money for uni but the problem is they won't accept me b/c of my shitty performance in highschool.

Is there anyone on this board who was in a similar or same situation as me that can give me advice as to what to do with myself?
>>
>>1654222
Go to a community college, do your work, get a high GPA, and transfer somewhere decent. That's what I did.
You may need to retake your ACT but there are some universities that don't require transfer students to submit SAT or ACT scores so that would depend on where you want to go.
>>
>>1654283
>Go to a community college, do your work, get a high GPA, and transfer somewhere decent.

And if you really buckle down you can transfer into a top tier university. But yes, follow this advice.

Is it possible to go to an out-of-country college with such qualifications? Like let's say I do all of those steps and then 'transfer to somewhere', is that somewhere limited to just my own nation?
>>
>>1654323
It varies by institution. You would have to look up the admission requirements for each place you're interested in and see what their stipulations for transfer students are.

If you want to work as an academic it only matters where you have you PhD.

A student with a BA from Oxford, and then a PhD from Bristol will be passed over for an applicant with a BA from Bristol and a PhD from Oxford. If they both have a PhD from Oxford then they'll look at the strength of your thesis.

"I'm applying for graduate school, will the university look at my A-levels?"

>It's hard to turn down that kind of money though, especially when it's just temporary (inb4 everyone says it's temp and then blows their life away there).
The thing is no one blows their life away there because investment banking isn't like other jobs. After around 6 months you'll be counting the days you spend still in the job and not doing something else. This isn't just me; I knew only one other guy who didn't hate the job after a year and he was one of those guys who are so enthusiastic no matter what that you begin to ask whether they're masochists or not. Oh and as for the money: you want save anything working in investment banking for the first 5 yrs and I've known senior level people at larger firms who don't have very large savings accounts. Once you take away taxes, living expenses (London and NYC are fucking expensive) and expensive dinners and clubs (a must unless you want to be known as the office artist who'll be let go after the first year because he isn't sociable enough).

Word to the wise, you can download basically ALL the books you need from either the library site or bookzz, even the certified rare ones that our (pretty but shitty) library doesn't have.
Pray you get Tim and not Liisi for a lecturer. K block, or at least last year, was a right laugh. Proper dickheads on the course though, whatever you do don't be the twat who doesn't shut up, or the one that ~~knows~~ that their personal view on the world and ideology is supreme and argue for half the seminar about it. You gotta make some friends amongst course mates, it makes it all a lot easier when exams roll around. Otherwise Dw that much, the only thing first year exams count towards is if you get a decent summer internship. A few of my mates are STYCing for K block so if they tell me about some utter autist, I'll know it's you anon <3
