there are a lot of things we never knew about macv-sog
so my grandfather was in vietnam and i have had conflicting reports and information about his actual unit but he was either part of LRRPs or in MACV-SOG.
i just finished putting together my black hawk down ranger kit so i think i'm going to try and build up a vietnam operator kit like this one.

That looks like a picture of the Marines in Lebanon.
>open vietnam thread
>It's ain't me starts playing
>i ain't no senator's son
Can someone explain to me:
let's say you are 18 years old in 1968 and don't want to go to Vietnam. You then get drafted into the marines. How on earth did those kids get through really tough bootcamp hell, even tho they didn't really want to go to Nam and had no interest in the marines or military life. Conscientious objectors aside. Seems like you need that drive/desire to become a marine to make it through cuz its tough.
tl;dr was it hard to do boot camp if you weren't feeling it...?

was it commonplace to steal the enemies ak-47 and use it? also were uzis allowed?
>>1633956
They beat the shit out of you.
>>1633983
still though, Parris Island is tough as hell, getting beat up only motivates so far. can't imagine getting through unless you really wanted it. maybe peer pressure drove a lot of the new recruits.
>>1633956
They were either adjusting or committing suicide.

Saved.
>>1633956
Well consider the options: you can try to flee to Canada but it's hard and also a crime. You can stay at home and protest and burn your draft card but they will put you in jail and you'll probably end up going anyway. You can go to bootcamp and have a breakdown and kill yourself. OR you can go to bootcamp and fucking survive. And then you go fight in the war and nobody knows what the fuck will happen, but this is the path with least resistance at least as far as the individual is concerned.
>>1634152
would the Marine Core want that kind of recruit anyway though? seems like its a lose/lose for everyone involved. it would be interesting to know what percentage of recruits at that time actively didn't want to be there or be marines...
>>1634152
Some people would deliberately give themselves an injury to avoid getting drafted.
Although I'd just like to point out that most draftees weren't sent to Vietnam, but rather to European posts, and that not all draftees were picked for combat roles.
>>1635355
but you know how the cookie crumbles. when its YOU getting drafted, you're going to nam.
Why do Vietnam era tunes have such cultural resonance, even with people who aren't American, or even alive for the time?

First, basic training is just that BASIC. Shit's designed for retards and is NOT tough for any dude that's not a pussy, let alone a dude that has some athletic ability.
Second, a lot of dudes actually end up embracing service simply due to the fact that they get judged by their actions, and not who they are, or where they came from. A good dude, is a good dude, and even draftee shitheads can grow to appreciate working with good dudes, and actually earning respect.
The people are the best, and worst, thing about military service.
>>1633956
1.) The vast majority of people who served in Vietnam were not draftees.
2.) Basic is easy as shit.
>>1631045
That a Frenchy?
