Not necessarily. During the first Gothic sack of Rome in 410, the two main basilicas of Peter and Paul were safe spaces that people could go, and there was no slaughter in general.
As far as I know, after the fall of Rome, there were the Dark Ages.
The Western Empire did not so much fall, as fade away. With educated Roman leaders and landlords being replaced by barbarian rulers

"Barbarian" is just a Greco-Roman term for foreigner, and that's what it means in this context. Surprisingly, the word did not have nearly as negative of a connotation as it does today. At worst it was like "Wetback", but it could also be neutral
