The stirrup seems to be the best there is.
Just like how firearms cant really develop much further, or car engines.
They weren't needed and are extremely overrated as an invention.

In addition they made climbing horses less of a chore. Which is how they were first invented in India or China, take your pick. Indians supposdely used one sling tied on a saddle. The Chinese made it two - on both sides, so you cant be assed to mount a horse on one side- and found out how it improved stability on horseback.
