People seem to forget that both Britain and France still do own a number of Overseas territories that are incredibly useful at naval and air force projection.

Sometimes thought that argument is instrumented the other way around.
Priot to France being bombed to hell and back, the french army was scrambling for justifications to be maintained as strong strike force, and one of their main arguments was "muh look at the size of our EEZ! we need a strong army and shieeet to protect it".
So as much an aid for the army as it is a burden.
