Mongol Empire and Islam

I don't think there were a lot of places they didn't wreck.

They didn't slaughter native populations if the native populations gave them stuff and didn't fight them.

If they did, we wouldn't have either China or Russia, and the world would be dramatically better.

The Mongols weren't about wiping out Islam. The Mongols ate that shit up like it was horse-jerky. They did not ethnically cleanse anybody because they found all cultures had something to provide. Many Mongols adopted the faiths and customs of the peoples they conquered. All that would have happened if the Mongols conquered the entire Middle East is that there would have been another Khanate or two once things fell apart.

Damascus had already submitted as tributaries to the Mongols after the sack of Baghdad

The Mamluks and Crusader states would have obviously resistsed, and would be wiped out.

The Mongols would continue on to invade and destroy the Byzantine successor states, and possibly take down the Latin Empire

Many of the Mongol leaders had already converted Islam by the time they began the invasion of Syria. There was a civil war because one of the Muslim leaders was against waging war against fellow Muslims so he supported the caliphate. The crusader states pussied out even before ever seeing the Mongols and became vassals.

The best the Mongols could do is take only Mesopotamia. If they go south, they get have to go through the Arabian Desert which I doubt even they could survive. If they go west to attack Egypt, they have to trek through the Sinai which would also be a hard march. The mamelukes could probably easily take them in the Sinai.

It'd be much more rational for the Mongols to turn their eyes to Europe again and march on Vienna.
