I actually spoken with an Elder couple a few times cause I was bored. They really are super nice, and definitely know a lot about their religion. But I couldn't get straight answers out of them on some of the bigger theological differences between Mormonism and mainstream Christianity. It felt a lot like a sales pitch designed to reel you in and get you invested in the community before letting you in on some of the weirder parts, like that God also has a father

Having been baptised as a mormon, it's 100% about being reeled into the community, that's what pulled me in, and wanting to believe in a higher power. Eventually I got tired of the stupidity of most of the people, I couldn't go along with it because I can't lie to myself.

I'm open to religion but not something so blatantly false.

>>
>>1575272
The Mormons seemed to have constructed themselves an impressive house of cards. No one can deny their financial success or the very appealing front they put on (literally every practicing mormon I've ever met has been clean cut and friendly). But delving even a little bit into the truly insane history of the church and their doctrine is a sharp juxtaposition. No wonder so many young people are leaving or just lapsing from the church these days.
>>
>>1575280
Maybe I'm a filthy degenerate but I could give up cigarettes and coffee and tea and chocolate and whatever else so long as I could have a few fucking drinks on the weekend. No such luck though, I wonder how many Mormons can stick to that rule once they go off to college. Maybe that's why they try to send them away on missions during that time of their youth.
>>
>>1575300
More stay with it than leave. Benefits-wise, it's better to just go with it, they usually end up happy, married, well off and get an immense amount of support. They're all incredibly nice well meaning people.
>>
>>1575041
I'm not American.
>>
>>1575336
I've met quite a few mormon missionaries here (ausfag) and apparently there's a church nearby but i've never met a convert
>>
>>1575307
Plenty of mormons in the US and over-seas go to BYU campuses which enforce the same moral code.

I know a few mormons who practise, and behind closed doors are gay, smoke, drink, do drugs etc.

I think they do it to maintain a more healthy mental life, I found that the ones that did these things were the smarter ones.
>>
>>1575332
>They're all incredibly nice well meaning people.
They stop being so nice when you try to leave the church.
>>
>>1575343
I'm >>1575272 and I'm Australian. I was at a low point in my life when I met the missionaries through a friend and the need I had for community, friends and support trumped me knowing it was false.

I still think about going to church, but I'm not going to. I still maintain they're the nicest most supportive and helpful people I've ever met.
>>
>>1575307
>No such luck though, I wonder how many Mormons can stick to that rule once they go off to college
Always bring two Mormons with you on a fishing trip.
If you bring only one he'll drink all your beer.

There's a shitload of alcohol sales in Utah.
>>
>>1575349
Not from my experience, but I can imagine it's different for those born into it and there would be differences amongst Elders, Bishops and Stake Presidents all over the world.
>>
>>1575354
Probably the strangest thing about mormon's and interacting with them is for most of them, particularly the younger generation, they seem incredibly false.
>>
>>1575354
apparently they have crazy high pornography consumption
>>
>>1575363
They have the highest amount of porn subscriptions. I think they actually rank fairly low in overall porn consumption.

This just tells me that a lot of well to do Mormon patriarchs like to jack off to HD porn shot in the valley and hell, I can't blame them.
>>
>>1575363
That's true. At church I heard about support groups to quit porn addiction, and even at a fast & testimony meeting a girl spoke about how bad porn was.

>>1575051
Fucking coffee?
>>
>>1575383
They don't force non-mormon students to attend services or anything, but they do have to stick by the same (or a similar) moral code.

And yeah, no coffee, tea, tobacco, alcohol, porn, masturbation etc etc. It's called the Word of wisdom here: https://www.lds.org/scriptures/dc-testament/dc/89.1-21?lang=eng#0
>>
>>1575390
Also this just reminded me, they don't drink wine at services either, just water.

Their reasoning for it is sketchy, basically 'wine back then wasn't that strong'.
>>
>>1575383
>>1575390
It's only hot coffee and tea, though, as far as I know.
>>
>>1575395
Technically yes, but plenty of teachers in the church would just think of that as a cop-out.
>>
>>1575395
It's also soda. The original verse forbids "hot drinks" and alcohol but the modern church considers anything with caffeine to be just as bad as coffee.

>>
what are their views on creationism/evolution?
also how the fuck do they reconcile their religion in the face of lack of archaeological evidence for semitic civilisations in the americas?

Most people fucking hated mormons and they were literally hunted like foxes and everyone who grew up around Joseph Smith knew he was a fucking cheat and huckster.. Through sheer incomprehensible luck the church actually found their Zion and founded the state of Utah. The story is so insane it would be compelling fiction, as it stands it's one of the most sublime parts of American history,
>>
>>1575417
Yeah, you expect mormons, JW's, etc to be like that.

>what are their views on creationism/evolution?

>also how the fuck do they reconcile their religion in the face of lack of archaeological evidence for semitic civilisations in the americas?

They don't, the church continues to maintain that the Book of Mormon actually happened.
>>
>>1575428
I never asked that, but I know they'd say something about faith and with evidence it's pointless.
>>
>>1575428
there is also the mormon minor scripture that was translated from some papyrus that Joseph Smith bought....trouble is that what of it has been preserved Egyptologists clearly tell its just standard funerary text

aparently a large chunk of BYU's archaeology department is just mormon aplogetics trying to sidestep a big old lack of any evidence...a while back tho they tried to claim mayan had hebrew roots
>>
>>1575428
I've heard they're mostly creationists. I don't know how they reconcile the lack of evidence, but I would guess they say the evidence is hidden or lost.
>>
>>1575041
I don't buy into major religions, what makes you think these whack ass cults can be even more convincing?
>>
>>1575446
Yeah if you want some really creative mental gymnastics look into the Book of Abraham. It's a dead obvious case of fraud that the church thought they'd never have to worry about since the scrolls were thought lost in the Chicago fire. I can only imagine the initial joy of finding out they'd survived and the resulting horror once real scholars got to take a look at them.

religion is a coping mechanism once you face your failure of your life, just like other contrived fantasizes, your faith in the scientific method included.

Religions are meant to leave material-bodily hedonism, travels, concerts, foods, sex and so on, for a spiritual hedonism, through prayers for theists and mediation for atheists.
Plenty of material hedonist love to think of themselves as less hedonistic than they are, since it improves their hedonism in thinking that they are not animals...most people who claim to be religious are not all, it is just the way they are.
In buddhism, you even leave this spiritual hedonism, after you have gained it, which is called jhanas, since you understand that this bliss from prayers, which is just a great, but not perfect concentration-stilness, are not personal nor permanent and that you are still prone to avidity and aversion.

Most Mormons realize that some of the church's more weird beliefs are retarded, although they never would admit it.

The community and morals are definitely why they keep going back in spite of the bullshit. Some of my cousins who are still in the church and are around my age have told me in private that they really only go because they enjoy the lifestyle, they stopped seriously believing in the faith as kids.

Some of the older Mormons still quite literally believe in all the crazy shit Smith and Young said/wrote, but they seem to be a vanishing breed. I think in 20-30 years, as the younger generation starts moving up in the church, it will reform to be more about the community and the totally bullshit stuff will be abandoned.

>>1577019
They believe pretty strongly that a house of god or place of worship must be beautiful and majestic in order to honor god. They are protestant but they subscribe to the whole Catholic theory of beauty and art being pleasing to god. Inside of those temples are equally opulent and gorgeous. Lots of stained glass (no iconography though, just color patterns), statuary, etc.

If you ever go to a Mormon service, there is a lot of singing. I mean a LOT of singing. That's why the Mormon tabernacle choir is a thing.

>They are protestant but they subscribe to the whole Catholic theory of beauty and art being pleasing to god

Interestingly enough, this is one of the things that turned me off to the church. When I was 15 or so I was so frustrated by the fact that we were trying to be two churches at once and didn't go far enough in either direction that I left. While they have great temples and music, so much of their art and composition are cheap copies off of other sects' and denominations' work. Personally, I wish they'd become more of a modernist Catholic church (Christ knows they have the finances for it), but as long as they keep this inauthentic identity without any consistency I could never imagine going back.

>>1577761
The vast, vast majority of Mormon services and Sunday school are devoted toward study of the Old and New Testament, and most of the teachings of the church are basically fundamental Protestant ideas, with a smattering of other religious ideas tossed in. The super crazy shit like God being basically an alien or the multiple heavens (complete with harems), or the baptizing the dead, stuff, is mostly only discussed by members of the priesthood and the higher levels of the Church.

The majority of the lay members are rarely exposed to that kind of stuff.

I would definitely classify Mormonism as an offshoot of Protestant (or at least Christian) religious ideology.

>>1577788
My Dad's family (whom I moved in with at around 8 or so), are staunch Catholics, and I always enjoyed Catholic mass more. I felt more at peace in Catholic churches than Mormon churches, and I enjoyed that mass was only like an hour as opposed to spending the whole day at church Mormon style.

I think you're over-stating it a little. While there are people who don't believe but still go for the community I think the vast majority just don't dig further into the religion when they hear something crazy that makes them doubt their faith. They don't want to disbelieve because they don't want to loose the community,

>>1577959
>The vast, vast majority of Mormon services and Sunday school are devoted toward study of the Old and New Testament

I don't know what church you grew up in but of all the LDS services I've been to over my life they were all highly centered around the Book of Mormon.

Mormons are Christians in the broadest sense of the term. That being they worship Jesus Christ (this excludes Muslims). I know your specific denomination has a litany of heresies lined up against the Mormons but for the sake of clean categorization, no one else cares.

You can't do anything fun and the shit turns you into a mindless husk consisting of phrases like, "No, I can't hang out I have Institute, Yes Ma'am, No Sir, No I'm not allowed to drink coffee but I can have soda and they're both stimulants, I know it doesn't make sense but I just follow church doctrine."

They are MASTERS of converting the weak and confused, those looking for a place to belong, they feed on it and turn it against you. That is what happened to my roomate, he was lonely and didn't have a lot of friends so this provided a stable stream of "friends". My other roomate and I invited the "Sisters" (Sister Missionaries) to our apartment to discuss Mormonism because we were curious:

The entire time they would explain their ridiculous doctrine and origin of Mormonism (as in Joseph Smith saw Jesus AND God in the woods in New York and spoke to him and said he would lead the new church but no one was around to witness this) they would say things like "Now, I swear this is true and I know the testament of Joseph Smith to be true in my heart so that means it's true." As if that is empirically supposed to convince me.

They are scum, and I can say this because I live with one.

I thought the church baptized Hitler by proxy so that even he would have a chance to find redemption in the afterlife?
>>
>>1578121
This is pretty much true. I spent time with them because a friend of mine was a mormon, and I was pulled in by community, they really took advantage, especially when my father died. They're still nice people, just very mindless.
>>
>>1576298
They're definitely rare. Most I've interracted with are cool with most media.
>>
I remember one time I asked for a free Book of Mormon from their website and two Mormons came up to my house a few days later

I called them stupid bitches and told them to get the fuck off my property after they handed me the book

I laughed at the shock on their faces after I slammed the door shut on them and watched them walk back to their car
>>
Few of them have rung my doorbell, Well, it was nice that you learned my language and also you appear to be brisk young men, but no thanks.
>>
>>1575411
I've recently got to hang around with an actual Mormon from none other than Salt Lake City and he whenever we invited him to eat outside, he drank nothing but lemonade.
Lemonade.

>And why are you all so fucking tall?
Lots of Utah folk have northern european ancestry. That's why they lots of mormons are taller, and whiter than sour cream.
>>
>>1576019
>against kids reading Harry Potter and basically only watching children's movies because anything else is too violent/erotic/satanic/whatever ?
Utah is statistically the most into geeky shit.
They must be familiar with weird cosmologies
>>
I don't understand religions and cults.

How do people believe someone who literally just made shit up that has no precedent?
If someone came up to you and says they are a prophet most don't believe him but the problem is who the fuck is that 1% that does and why?
>>
>>1578546
A few boards to the right, there's this massive chunk of people that believe in a worldwide jewish conspiracy.
>>
Do they help Mormons to get to Utah as Israeli Jews help Jews to get to Israel?
>>
>tfw kinda appreciate Mormonism and its ethics
>tfw not an American
too bad it's inherently American religion
>>
>>1579170
This is where the LDS church proves you wrong. They proselytize worldwide.

But yeah you miss out on most of the community if you don't live in Utah.
>>
>>1579178
how successful have their missionary activities been?

are there mini utahs worldwide?
>>
>>1579170
are you an Anti-American shitposter or do you just mean that you're too far away geographically?
>>
I was told that in Mormonism God is basically a space alien, one of many other similar beings.

Is it true? Is this in their holy scripture?
>>
>>1579195

In my European country their effectiveness is essentially zero. People got used to cults after the massive invasion of JW in 1990s. Plus, Mormons butcher our language so funny that no one takes them seriously.
>>
>>1579195
There is a significant population of Japanese Mormons in Japan

They even have temples over there
>>
>>1579196
>are you an Anti-American shitposter or do you just mean that you're too far away geographically?
Why would i be anti-American? I just like Mormonism but feel it would be out of place if i started practicing it in the middle of Europe.
>>
>>1579195
Not very successful in Asia and Europe. They're getting a warm reception in Latin America though along with other charismatic protestant branches.
>>
>>1579197
For clarification God in Mormonism usually means God the father. But yeah, Lorenzo Snow summarized it fairly well.

>As man now is, God once was: / As God now is, man may be

Though this wasn't part of Mormon doctrine till towards the end of Smith's life. The book of Mormon can even been seen as having a social Trinitarian concept more in line with other protestants.
>>
>>1578475
Yeah, they get dropped into foreign countries with little to no training in local language.

>>1578455
3 edgy 5 me

>>1579195
check the number of temples worldwide, there's like 5 temples in Australia if i recall correctly.

>>1579221
check to see if there's a local chapel. They're quite wide-spread. Way more mormons than JW's.
>>
Why the fuck do Mormon chicks tend to be so fucking hot? It's kind of like a curse. Their women look good but it's about as NO FUN ALLOWED as a religion can get without going full on muslim.
>>
>tfw live in Missouri
It's not heaven guys. Only the Ozarks and caves are heavenly
>>
>>1575041
booze is literally the answer to all of life's woes why would i try to make built in friends that don't acknowledge that truth.
>>
because I'm a Christian

I think I've heard it put best by my friend who's going to BYU: "Everyone is exactly the same." Like, they all look the same, think the same, and act the same. It's kinda eerie.

I've been renting a room from a Mormon family in Utah for about two months now, and I've gone along when they invited me and I've talked to some missionaries as well. On the surface, everything is fine. I don't think I've met a single unpleasant person and the stuff they teach in church is all legitimately good stuff, though the prohibition of alcohol, coffee, and tea would prevent me from ever converting. Despite all of this, though, I've always felt a bit uneasy when I hear them try to elaborate on their beliefs. The whole story of Joseph Smith struck me as bizarre, and it always irked me how Mormons are constantly saying that they "know the scripture to be true" or "know the church is true," as if they have to constantly affirm to each other that they're not absolutely insane.

Overall, it's always seemed to me like the people were fine, but the church itself was just wacky.

Mormon freelance shills please go. Or just fucking actually read about Joseph Smith. He was a fucking megalomaniac and very blatant con artist. You are talking about the man who had a 14 year old wife and coerced her into marriage saying an angel with a flaming sword appeared to him and commanded him to marry her lest he be killed. He would also send Men on missions far away and marry their wives when they were gone. He was a piece of shit. Read the CES letter you fucking retard. You think you can actually learn anything about ol Joe from church doctrine? Fucking laughable. They are well aware their empire is built on a con mans lies and they want to keep that hidden from the braindead mormon sheeple. "D d do not research church history from anything but church approved material, t t there are people out there who say awful untrue things about the church! Also keep paying us 10% of all your income for life if you want to get to the highest kingdom of heaven and live with God and Jesus, I mean you do want that right? So then you just gotta pay us what you owe god or else we cannot in good faith give you enterence to the temple and no temple attendence = no highest heaven. DO NOT LOOK AT NON CHURCH APPROVED MATERIAL. IGNORE THE 2 BILLION DOLLAR UPSCALE SHOPPING MALL WE BUILT IN SALT LAKE, JESUS NEEDED IT! PAY YOUR TITHING!!!!!

I was a Mormon for 22 fucking years man. Wake. The. Fuck. Up. it is a business and a cult built on the lies of a literal con-artist (jo smith was TWICE convicted of fraud in court and chased out of multiple towns due to his schemes). No other religion is so obviously full of shit. Cult. pure and simple.
>>
>>1580785
LMAO, why are ex-Mormons always so butthurt about their former church?
>>
>>1581006
similar to most people who leave cults
>>
>>1575041
i was. i dropped out.
>>
>>1581006
i was edgy after i quit.
>>
>>1581006
i was pissed that i'd been lied to, so i overcompensated. i'm fine now.
>>
>>1581031
do they shun people who leave?
>>
>>1581056
nope, but nobody has tried to "love me back in to the church either". one guy invited me over for some guitar hero, but bullied me and hasn't talked to me since.

it's notable that my dad dealt with records, and he asked if i wanted my name removed, and i said yes. i imagine that has a lot to do with it.
>>
>>1581044
how did you fall for their nonsense to begin with? born into it?
>>
>>1581062
yep.
>>
>>1576019
isn't the lady that wrote Twilight a Mormon?
>>
>>1580785

>jo smith was TWICE convicted of fraud in court and chased out of multiple towns due to his schemes

There are court records showing his involvement in cons but Mormons are still in full denial about their American Muhammad.
>>
>>1581080
Yes she is.
>>
>>1579240

Yeah, it's pretty horrible. They're going to one of the only continents where everyone is Christian and wasting their time converting them AWAY from actual christianity.
>>
>>1580602

Hey, I know that feel...

>mfw no one has made a Huckleberry Finn wojack yet
>>
>>1582968
Mexican here.
>>1580785
They do the same shit here about constantly reassuring themselves that their religion is the right one so I'm inclined to believe it's definitely a church thing they're exporting.

Feels bad man.
