Who were the Arabs and what was their pre-Islamic society like?

There were urban arabs and bedouin arabs.

The Nabateans were recorded by ancient people as a race of merchants, the ruins of their city of Petra is considered one of the wonders of the world. Further south, trade-based cities at Mecca and Medina had a thriving and cosmopolitan character, and the Arab influenced Swahili coast in East Africa has long been one of the most advanced and prosperous regions on that continent. Sadly very little is left of pre-Islamic Arabia, but many of their cultural memes are preserved in Islam, mostly via the hadiths, stuff like the "Islamic" dress code or the importance of hospitality to strangers (which survived despite Muslim chauvinism).

if these buildings are carved out of rock, why do they have pillars? they are just for aesthetics?
>>1564216
Yep, they were copying Greeks and Romans, but they do have their own unique designs too, the segmented sections and steps they do on the top are totally Nabatean.
