I've heard that "happy" come from an old german word for "luck", meaning people who are happy are just lucky.
harmony between purpose and function
I see happiness as being an activated state of mind, a flourishing of the mind. Contentment could just be an acceptance of things as they are, or the state of being free from suffering in a passive sense. Happiness involves some kind of energy towards something. A positive energy.

Dopamine, seratonin, enorphins, cannabanoids, and other neurotransmitters that tickle the happy centers of the brain.
Too bad firing these off via substances leads to absolute sadness in the long run. Without homeostasis in the brain, you cannot adapt.
Truly you need the valleys to enjoy the peaks, at least in the long run.
