Socrates and most philosophers around his time and setting were probably real people with lots of legend attached to them.

Later philosophers would use earlier ones as characters representing ideals in their analogies.

And also why would Plato channel Socrates anyways if he could just present them as his own? He wasnt writing for us, he was writing for an audience that could very easily have personally known Socrates.

history as we know it didnt exist until the age of the enlightenment and particularly cameras and the printing press. Before that we had mythology that looked a lot like real history, but it was nevertheless mythology, just in a more civilised and sophisticated form, and more realistic style. Alot of people recorded in that era did not exist, a lot of the events didnt happen at least not in the way they are described. People like socrates and even plato certainly didnt. Accounts of cultures that were enemies or perceived inferiors are nearly 100% propaganda
