>During the Battle of the Somme the Ulster Division was the only division of X Corps to have achieved its objectives on the opening day of the battle. This came at a heavy price, with the division suffering in two days of fighting 5,500 officers and enlisted men killed, wounded or missing.
>War correspondent Philip Gibbs said of the Division, "Their attack was one of the finest displays of human courage in the world.
>Of nine Victoria Crosses given to British forces in the battle, four were awarded to 36th Division soldiers.

How are they based?
They just ran into the meat grinder like brainless cattle.
>>1523718
This.
WW1 was full of incompetent retards who thought a mass infantry assault right into machine guns and artillery barrages was "honourable" and therefore kept doing it
>>1523720
you are wrong
>>1523768
Nah it was people laying in trenches being blown to kingdom fuck by artillery
>>1523718
>the Ulster Division was the only division of X Corps to have achieved its objectives on the opening day of the battle.
that's how
I heard that one division (or whatever unit) was ordered by their officer to leave the trenches early before the agreed start time so they were crossing no-man's land while the artillery bombardment was still going on. This meant they were able to reach the german trench before they had a chance to re-setup once the barrage finished.
So their officer went off book and invented the creeping barrage?
>>1523838
Creeping barrage was used for the first time during 2nd Balkan war.
>>1523768
During an offensive, yes, this is what it was like. Lines of men being cut down by machine guns.

>doing the basic job tat it was assumed you'd be able to do and getting massacred makes you a badass

Mostly sitting around in a trench (probably not even front line) for like a week and then rotating out.
>>1523884
it was retarded though, in basically every aspect it was stupid and pointless and left Europe worse off
>>1523895

>>1523911
>Did you get your information on WW1 from that video in black and white and the cow mooing?
did you get yours from fucking BlackAdder or something?
The leading battalions (of the 36th (Ulster) Division) had been ordered out from the wood just before 7.30am and laid down near the German trenches ... At zero hour the British barrage lifted. Bugles blew the "Advance". Up sprang the Ulstermen and, without forming up in the waves adopted by other divisions, they rushed the German front line ..... By a combination of sensible tactics and Ulster dash, the prize that eluded so many, the capture of a long section of the German front line, had been accomplished.

Don't talk shit about Blackadder faggot
>"There was many who went over the top at the Somme who were Ulstermen, at least one, Sergeant Samuel Kelly of 9th Inniskillings wearing his Ulster Sash, while others wore orange ribbons"
>When some of his men wavered, one Company commander from the West Belfasts, Maj. George Gaffikin, took off his Orange Sash, held it high for his men to see and roared the traditional war-cry of the battle of the Boyne; " Come on, boys! No surrender!"
>>1523930
>Actual history
>"WW1 wasn't THAT bad"
