They failed to retake the balkans from the Ottomans. Though I doubt an equivalent western Islamic empire would have been as powerful given the fewer resources in Greater Maghreb. After the medieval agricultural revolution their eventual fate was sealed.

In this alternate history I imagine 12th century Tangier merchants develop superior naval technology and dominate trade through the gates of Hercules. This gives Andalusia and Morrocco a new breath of life. The European Iberian kingdoms then have a civil war allowing some opportunist warlord to push the Northern Kingdoms back and take territory in Southern Portugal, a crushing blow that allows Andalusia to make it to the 16th century. Some Muslim dynasty entrenches itself and invests in further expeditions, possibly to the new world then pushes to the Pyrennes some time in the 16th century, taking advantage of the chaos in Europe duee to the reformation. Other European nations eventually compete in these colonial enterprises, but not Spain. Andalusia would likely tolerate the large christian community to deter rebellion and a French invasion.

Andalusia declines in the 17th century as Spain did and eventually northern regions gain independence, if not in the 17th then in the 18th during the enlightenment. Southern Spain and Portugal would still be mostly Muslim today, the Muslim role in the renaissance and age of sail and muslim colonies would probably change Islam's character.

After the defeat of the kingdoms of Leon and Castille, they would probably be forced to convert just like they did to ppl that where left on the south extending the Andaluz culture far north. Also it would disable the peregrination to Santiago de Compostela

Basques would probably make a staunche resistance as they always have done, but they could be finally genocided or allowed to exist as dhimmis

Iberian Caliphate would be in a state of almost constant war and raids intro France. France/HRE would get a much more crusader like culture since their politics would be reduced to remove kebab.

If france is left too weakened by the raids, the caliphate could annex the Occitan area just as they did very briefly and the rest could be annexed on a much more military oriented HRE which woul not allow princely states and could be actually and finally really stop being a meme estate.

There would be no crusades since the danger is much more closer to home for the pope and they would just make a christian duty to genocide muslims. There could be even an Abbasid-Christian alliance to remove Ummayads

If the reconquista is finally done, it would be done by HRE ppl and spain recolonized by the germano-romance speaking West Romans and the iberian peninsula would be divided on a serie of historical and geographical duchys and counties
