Yeah. His army got fucked pretty badly with the fight against Porus. Porus was one of the kings of the Pauravas empire.

Western history tells us that the battle was bloody and hard fought on both sides. The winner in the western pov is Alexander. He then awarded Porus many of the neighboring territories that he won earlier and made him a "governor". With the Greeks and their penchant to godify and immortalize Alexander, this could easily be overlooked as facts.

However a more "neutral" look would be something more "controversial." Porus stalemated Alexander and his army at great cost. There had then been a truce between them where Porus gained large sums of territory from Alexander in exchange for some elephants. Because Alexander's army couldn't push Porus, he went back home.

More so, the neighboring Nanda would be lot more to deal with if they couldn't defeat Porus effectively. Nanda empire was roughly 10-20x more powerful in all fronts of war(infantry/elephants/archers/cavalry/etc).

Remember, Porus fought against an army that consisted of veterans across all lines and being outnumbered 2 to 1.

His push into India won't happen again even if he lived for another 10 years. Maybe 20 years if he can regain more effective troops. However the results of Nanda, and the now-prepared Porus would have made his push lot more different.
