God no, French is very divergent. Italian is one of the closest Romance languages to Latin, only Romanian and weird micro-languages like Ladino are closer.

You misunderstand me. I meant that latin is as similar to italian as italian is to french, not that latin is as similar to italian as it is to french.

Dutch here, it was mandatory at the highest high school level here as well. My graduation exam was translating some parts of Ab Urbe Condita
