Hey /his/, i was wondering from where does the estereotype of romans becoming hedonists and generally morally bankrupt during the decline of the empires comes from, considering most romans became pius,no fun allowed christians?
>>
>>1471931
Its mostly just a meme as far as it getting worse as they declined. The romans had a wierd sort of contrast all through their history of decadence and stoicism
>>
The decadence was during the fall of the Republic and beginning of the Empire. The Empire was completely degenerate until Christendom.
>>
>>1471944
So they were degenerate at their peak then?.Good to know.
>>
>>1471956
The Roman Empire wasn't much of a peak, more like a long decline.

>considering most romans became pius,no fun allowed christians?

>not knowing emperors didn't become baptized until their deathbeds, so they were free to sin/kill as much as they needed
>not knowing of the agape feasts that quickly turned to drunken orgies before bishops began condemning them
>not wanting to go slumming with your trinitarian friends in the streets of Antioch, looking for Arians you could beat to death
>>

Explain your reasoning
>>

It wasn't so much as "hedonism" as it was about finding increasing hope of salvation in the afterlife rather than civic duty and knowing to plant trees for society whose shade you would never sit in.
>>
>>1471976
this

there was nothing wrong with fucking dudes on the side as long as you had enough sense to help leave behind a good society for the future

not like boomers who were hedonistic AND fucked over everyone who came after them

Roman economic output steadily declined starting in the first century. It pretty much reached its full size in the first century BC and then stopped growing aside from minor changes. It didn't advance technology or engineering or anything else in any way compared to the times of the Republic. It never progressed militarily either. And while it was never terrible stable in the first place, it became more and more unstable.

When a civilisation reached its imperial stage like Rome did, it becomes like frozen. It loses all capacity for growth, and the empire only exists as a monument to a mummified civilisation.

Pagan Greco-Romans were absolute shit at long term planning or at doing anything for future generations, unlike Christian Westerners.
