The brits sent families to colonize which is the standard way of doing it. Foolproof method.

The spaniards sent war veterans to dominate as much land as possible. Since they sent no women, the men had to fuck locals.

The portuguese set up mass plantations of profitable goods (sugar early on, tobaco and coffee later). Since portugal didn't have any population, and crossing the atlantic in 16th century was rough, they imported industrial quantities of african slaves (bough on their outposts in W. Africa) to work them.
Same aplies to the dutch, but without the access to african slaves

Eve though Spanish Colonization started the earliest, in 1492, they sent less people to the Americas than both the English and Portuguese.

English colonization was massive in numbers in coparison to Spanish colonization, and Portuguese colonization became massive in the XVIII century when they discovered gold in Minas Gerais, half a million people moved to Brazil and the Portuguese government had to stop emmigration due to fear of depopulation in Portugal.
Because of that XVIII century gold rush, Portugal sent more people to the Americas than Spain, even though it is a much smaller country.

Also, the American colonies belonged to the crown of Castille, which meant that until the Bourbons in the 1700s Catalans, Valencians and Aragonese (and South Italians) couldnt emmigrate to the Americas.

Is that Spanish colonization was started by Single men who wanted to became wealthy, who mixed in society and sexually with natives, who were thinly spread through a huge territory from Mexico to Argentina.
And after that initial period, most of the Spanish emmigration to the Americas was made of bourocrats and soldiers sent from Spain to the Americas to replace other bourocrats and soldiers.
Most of the society was made of natives, and the main economic activity was the silver of Mexico and Peru. The rest of the America worked to provide the mining centers with stuff like clothes, donkeys, wine etc, but they didnt care much about exploiting America apart from the mines of Peru/Bolivia and Mexico. Those were the big centers, and the rest was a low populaiton, low economic activity periphery.

Natives were not a part of their society, and the American colonists werent very interested in converting them to christianity like the Spanish.

In Spanish America Natives could not be slaves (but they had a status like that of kids, not adults). Blacks could be slaves.
They used modified native institution to exploit them like the Mita, which was similar to military service but for mining with a high risk of death.

Portuguese colonization started as private colonization, of the many attempts, only one in the north east (Pernambuco) and in future Sao Paulo succeded. At that time Portugal cared far more about its colonies in India and Asia, and they almost lose their northern Brazilian colonies to the Dutch.
They took advantage of their 1580-1640 union with Spain to expand to the west beyond the Tordesillas line.
Slavery was massive, Brazil is close to Africa, Portugal had African colonies, and they also hunted native slaves, especially those of the Spanish Jesuit missions around Paraguay, because they were educated and trained, much better than a native from the Jungle.
The most important product for them was first sugar in the north, then gold in Minas Gerais, and after independence, Coffee.

Brazil didnt abolish slavery till the 1880s and had to be pressured by the British to do so.
