Would we be better off if nihilism was never a thing?
Honestly, no, it's an essential step in self-overcoming

It' meaningless to ask...
Nothingism is not a thing.
What kind of nihilism?
Also, no, probably not. But it's a meaningless question to ask. When you start asserting reality has meaning (since I'm assuming you mean existential nihilism, as that's the most commonly brought up), it's inevitable that someone is going to conclude that there is no meaning when any attempt at demonstrating meaning falls flat.
After reading crime and punishment, I feel like Fedor Dostoevsky was trying to imply that nihilism is a total cancer. I kinda agree

I contend that the main problem with nihilism is our transition from a system with a grand meaning to a nihilistic one. People seem to fail to grasp that we can still keep doing the same basic shit, and that not descending into hedonistic self-destruction is still in our best interests in a nihilistic universe.

It'd be better off if people stopped misinterpreting it.
