What was the Marshall Plan? How did it affect the countries which it applied to? Was it a positive or negative thing?
Could a similar scheme be put in place today to help eastern European countries recover from communism?

It was food aid and development given to a wide array of countries by the U.S. after the end of WWII. In countries like the UK, France, and Germany, it's often credited with helping speed up the post war economic recovery and promote stability in the existing power structures of Europe. There was a great fear that if the U.S. did nothing, that communist/fascist sympathies would flare up again and overtake the entirety of Europe.
For most countries, it was seen as a fairly positive thing, and it built a lot of good will between the U.S. and European governments that exists to this day.
