They lived in warmer climates. Many tribes still do not wear any footwear. For example in Amazon jungles the only acceptable footwear are rubber boots, because they are good protection from snakes.
Shoe is not that new invention either. They first appeared at least 10000 years ago.
Later shoes were often not only leather, but also had filling, like dry straws (which was also solution for not fitting shoes, when passed from father to son). Even today paper is great insulation, if put inside boots.

I even found pic related. First leather shoe from 5500 years ago, found in Armenia. As you can see, it's filled with straw.

a fag who has warm and comfy feet. and a wilderness isn't a damn fashion show anyway.

Because that's a fashionable shoe meant to show off how wealthy and important you are. Look up "pattens" and "footed hose" for ways of keeping the feet warm in the time period those kind of shoes were popular.

Thy didn't wear these alone, they also wore several layers of fabric, fur or othet things wrapped around their feet.
When did socks start to become commonplace.

19th century. early 20th in rural areas.

In colder areas pretty much as soon as knitting became a thing. In hotter areas it was a more recent thing.

no. foot rags were still doing fine well to the 1900's especially in those colder areas.
