I remember reading histories of Nazi Germany as a teenager which touted "Hitler did Reichstag" as uncontested fact, and just assumed this was the case for years. But as far as I've ever been able to discover after finally deciding to look into it, this is nothing more than a "What if this is true?" that's been getting thrown around as a possibility since the event itself. It's pretty much the "government did 9/11" of Nazi Germany.

Mind you, I'm not saying I know for sure that that ISN'T exactly what happened, but it tends to get paraded around in literature as fact, when it's anything but. It's at least as likely that communists did it after all. Who ultimately benefited from something is no indicator by itself of who was responsible for it. Short-sighted idiots grant their enemies unexpected golden opportunities all the time while intending to do the opposite.
