Fuck Hitler, and all that, but you can't deny the man won his appointment as Chancellor through democratically means. The issue is that Americans can't can't comprehend any system where their most important government figure isn't directly elected.

In both the fair and free July and November 1932 elections the NSDAP received a plurality of votes, eclipsing there closest opposition from the SPD. However the independent Franz von Papen was able to remain in office due to the support of President Hindenburg, with no real public of parliamentary backing.

Eventually Papen agreed to allow Hitler to form a minority administration, believing he and other independent politicians such as Kurt von Schleicher would be able to control and reign in the NSDAP (von Papen was made Vice Chancellor).

The Chancellor was to be who could gain a majority of support from the Reichstag, and the Reichstag pro-republic parties like the SPD and Centre party lacked the seats for a majority, while the NSDAP and KPD would never work together, and for a time Hindenburg kept Papen in office. Eventually he conceded and have the Chancellroship to the leader of the largest party, with the most public support in the democratic elections of 1932.
