Around the time of the reconquista, when the Spanish converted everyone to Christianity. After there were no more Muslims in spain, the nobles started turning on each other and used moorish ancestry as a new way to discriminate. Since these 'conversos' were Christiand culturally Spanish this new form of discrimination was based on heritage rather than culture or religion. This coinvided with the conquest of the Americas, so the Spaniards were able to apply this new paradigm to the natives as well.
