Why was his warning about Nihilism so important?

Look around you. You see what happens when people have nothing to strive for, they start to self-destruct.

This is somewhat similar to Isiah Berlin's notion of positive and negative liberty. We live in a world of negative liberty, which is a world intentionally with no meaning. However, positive liberty, which is liberty with some kind of purpose attached, will always be a massive threat to negative liberty, because of the meaning, purpose and hope it provides.

Or in other words: people will never settle for a simple office job, and will sometimes even prefer neo-nazi/ISIS membership over it

I don't think it was, and I don't think nihilism is inherently destructive. What I do think is destructive is the despair that comes from our transition away from meaning towards nihilism, and I think Nietzsche's ultimate aim was to avoid that by propping us up with another meaning, when instead we could focus on a healthy transition into nihilism.

Probably something like Taoism (the early philosophical Taoism of the Tao Te Ching and Chuang Tzu), and I think it would differ from Absurdism in that there wouldn't be a specific drive to rebel against the meaningless nature of existence.

It's true, though, in as much as the "desire for a transcendent Cause" aspect anon described. Both nazis and islamists are often the downtrodden, disgruntled lower-classes rebuking the coarsely individualist materialism that threatens their traditional lifestyle. Both have the extremely legitimate claim of a spiritual need that international capitalism is neglecting. Man can't live on tendies and TV alone, the massive anxiety, depression, and frequency suicide of the affluent modern Westerner should speak to that.

This is not to equate one or another MORALLY, certainly, but you can see how the psychology is comparable, and indeed fairly sympathetic.

So we see the trailer-trash that have the least to lose, of course. No self-respecting chemical engineer or philologist would speak out, oh no.
But among the upper classes, what factors would attract someone to either ideology, if not those I mentioned? If you're satisfied with materialist, nationalist, individualist etc. and don't mind Rabbi next door or Tyrese seeing your daughter, what pull would fascism hold for you? The fundamental "Cause" is what separates extremism from, idk, political reform with a lacking sense of urgency.
