Bucket helmets will always be the best helmets

Agreed.
Oh yes
they are scary, I give you that
Terrible helmet design. They scrapped the domed top and then ended up having to go back to it because flat tops = death
Also why do they need such face protection, it limits vision so much any face you're saving is offset by how little you can see meaning more likely to get hit
>>1440500
Looks like a bitch to wear, but damn it looks good
>>1440500
This is ceremonial, it wouldn't be worn in battle as someone could grab the horns.
respectfully disagree
sallet here
Kettle helms are the most aesthetic
Doesn't get more stylish than morions
/thread
>>1440511
No you are wrong; in melee combat you can't afford to open yourself up by trying to grab someone's helmet because that person will just stab you. From time immemorial people have worn outlandish non-functional things into battle for psychological purposes but us moderns have been so removed from the warrior ethos due to the advent of mechanized warfare we tend to dismiss the ritualistic/spiritual aspects of combat which were obvious to previous generations.

For what purpose?

Visors spoil the aesthetic.
Were visored bascinets like this ever a thing historically? I really like the look of them.
>>1440619
>>1440626
yup, just like /mu/
>>1440696
Visors make the aesthetic. bascinets are bland without them.

Nasal helm...with fuck tons of chainmail....ez...
>>1441190
Perhaps, but it would be a small price to pay if you wish to unnerve the enemy.
With training even the most unwieldy things can be purposed towards efficiency.
I wouldn't expect it to be in wide distribution though, probably for that exact reason.
Probably owned by a well trained officer.

And /his/ is just as full of memes as ever
A great helm was disposable. You wore it during the charge and then threw it away when you closed with the enemy, relying on your skullcap and coif/low-profile bascinet depending on era to protect you. It was primarily to deflect arrows. After the battle you'd go pick it up again, or just get another made. Great helms were cheap as fuck. Horns, wings, weird headdresses, plenty of adorning features on them because they were disposable and wouldn't affect your actual combat performance.
Also burgonet with falling buff masterrace
>>1441797
Better visibility than a kettle hat, same basic principle. Easy as fuck to make in large numbers, fits will with the munitions plate they were making around that time.

What are these types of helmets called? Looks Greco-roman inspired.
>>1445136
Bottom left looks a bit like the Corinthian helmet. The rest look like crosses with that, the Attic-type, and a Roman galea.
>>1440462
They're awful. Horrible protection to hits from above.

Why do they look like that?
They seem really heavy.
What was the point of that weird shaped cap?
>>1440473
is that supposed to be Simon de Montfort?
>>1447470
Its a metal version of a felt hat worn.
It was suggested by Xenophon to be used for cavalry and was used in this way for Alexander the greats army.
Its like a kettle helmet. It has the sides to direct blows away and an open face so that you get better vision, for example while riding a horse.
>>1441315
I imagine it would be more intended for your friends actually, so they can see where their commander is.
Actual best helmet coming through

>>1448038

>>1448062
I think you're referring to the plume, or mane as it is sometimes known. It's for appearance but can intimidate the enemy since it makes the wearer appear larger then he really is. Plumes are usually made out of material such as horse hair so it's no like solid metal.
>>1447992
Good luck trying to deflect sword blows with that patch of leather
>>1450188
>leather
Pith helmets are made of either pith or cork, not leather.
>>1441266
If you got hit in the face with a lance, and we're assuming this a couched lance being delivered by a charging warhorse, no you wouldn't care because you'd be dead or unconscious.
