For the record, Latins and Slavs were considered Aryan, it wasn't a synonym of Germanic. Rosenberg explicitly states that the ancient Slavs were an Aryan folk before Russia introduced loads of Finno-Ugric blood into their genepool.

The Nazis hated the Gypsies because they believed they were an inferior, degenerate race. They didn't care that they happened to have indo-european origins. Hitler believed slavs were an inferior gene pool of degenerates, criminals and peasants, even though he acknowledged they were Aryan.

First of all, his racism ran contrary to any established european nationalism. The German nation was secondary, or even unimportant, to the race that inhabited it. The reason he demanded such sacrifice form his people was because he believed that they weren't worth anything if they didn't prove themselves worthy by fighting for their survival. Check out Timothy Snyders' work and "Ostkrieg" by Stephen G. Fritz.

Second, his behavior doesn't make sense if it was all just rhetoric and strategy. He published Mein Kampf in a time when he believed that the struggle was lost, and he didn't change his beliefs at all. He also wouldn't have let the German people face total destruction at the hands of the Red Army rather than surrendering when the war was lost.
