Understanding the Orthodox conception of Theosis

Let us think of vinegar as human nature, and oil as divine nature. Christ was like a cup filled with both (the Chalcedonian description of this would be "two liquids, oil and vinegar, without separation", the miaphysite description would be "one liquid, oil and vinegar, without mixture or confusion"). But the vinegar of Christ (here representing human nature) was different from other vinegar in that it was not contaminated by poison (even Mary, though she did not *create* anymore poison to contaminate vinegar, still suffered from the poison herself that had been in spreading in creation since the fall, that is what brought about her dormition).

Now we are all just vinegar (that means the human mind, soul, spirit, and body, all distinct concepts in Orthodox philosophy), and we are mixed with poison. But our vinegar can achieve a *communion* with the oil, and therefore become as one with it in the same way Christ's vinegar was--that is to the point that our vinegar no longer maintains distinct hypostasis, but shares the hypostasis of the oil (but doesn't transform into oil). This is achieved both spiritually (through things like stillness and contemplation of the divine) and physically (most particularly through Communion, where we add Christ's vinegar with our own in order to achieve the relationship of his vinegar to his oil).

Also, the poison is dissolved by Christ's blood. That is what purify's our vinegar. Thus even though we are vinegar and have a "sinful nature" (poisonous nature), vinegar is not naturally poisonous, human nature is not sinful, rather our sinfulness is a secondary nature taken on which *impairs our humanity* (just like the vinegar is impaired by being mixed with 90% poison, since it is barely even vinegar at that point).

That's not a hymn you generally hear at church. Agni Parthene (O Virgin Pure) is sung on a frequent basis at my parish as the closing hymn after the liturgy.
