Would it have worked?
>>
Given that it was a 'design-only[' aircraft, one can easily assume that that immediate design probably had flaws in it that needed to be worked out, just like every other machine and piece of equipment when it is being built and tested.
>>
>>1414703
Do you think the final product would have been able to fill the 'Amerika Bomber' role?
>>
>>1414707
Depends on what operations the Wehrmacht and Schutzstaffel would be having the Luftwaffe do, for its time.
>>
>>1414707

Does it even matter? Let's assume they had a bomber that could fly all the way across the Atlantic to bomb American cities. So what? The Luftwaffe were unable to defeat British cities through bombing and they were much, much closer targets.

Sending a bomber across the Atlantic to the USA would be a suicide mission for everybody involved.
>>
>>1414724
>he thinks that the burgers had high altitude fighters at home
Nah senpai, they were all in Yurope.
>>
>>1414730

Which means that the bombers would get shot down even faster.
>>
>>1414731
That's......actually a good point.
>>
>>1414740

And even if that weren't the case, do you really think that WW2 era USA in full wartime production mode would have any trouble quickly spurting out a few extra fighters to defend the homeland?
>>
>>1414750
Still, the impact would be there.
Imagine the shitstorm the US government would face if a German bomber actually manage to bomb Jew York or DC....
>>
>>1414752

What shitstorm?

They would just temporarily shift production from producing bombers to producing fighters. It would be a minor set-back at most.
>>
>>1414757
>implying that there wouldn't be HAPPENING fags banging on the door of the white house
>>
>>1414760
This.
>>
>>1414636
Depends what you mean by "worked."

It definitely would have been a better idea than the He 177 given that the Germans were having so much trouble creating that new class of high-powered piston engines.

But with how late it would have entered service, it wouldn't have been able to make much of an impact. Germany lacked the industrial capacity to create a force large enough to really alter the course of the war, and all their Amerika Bomber hopes were dashed when Portugal leased the Azores to Britain in 1943.
>>
>>1414808
What would have been the best plane for the role of 'Amerika Bomber'?
>>
>>1414636

The general consensus is that Hitler's obsession with trying to make "wonder weapons" that could terrify the Allies into suing for peace was counter-productive and hindered the German war effort more than enhancing it.

Again, depends on what you wanted the Amerika Bomber to do. IIRC, the official winner of the competion was Messerschmitt's Me 264, but none of the contenders really had the range to do more than a token raid based out of the Azores. And while there were some late-war projects that promised true intercontinental range, those weren't really realistic given the circumstances of the war.

What was the best design for an Amerika Bomber?
>>
>>1414817
>>1414863

There was no "good" design because it wasn't a practical objective in the first place. Why waste scarce resources to trying to bomb another continent when you're already fighting on your own continent?
>>
>>1414906
Morale reasons?

Personal favorite of mine is the Horten flying wing, but realistically there was nothing Germany had on the drawing board, let alone flying, that would have been able to hit America before the war ended.

Damn that thing looks sexy as hell.

Post more sexy aircraft.

You should play BF1942: Secret Weapons

>range to do more than a token raid based out of the Azores
the 264 had a ferry range of 9500 miles, more than enough to make a round trip from western germany to new york
>>
>>1415178
It probably wouldn't be able to fly there in a straight line though, surely they would have to do all sorts of maneuvering to avoid Allied forces.
>>
>>1415184
it still had about 450 miles extra in the tank when flying from frankfurt to new york
