You should check out Maimonides's work, especially a guide to the perplexed.

Although, I should warn you, despite it being a "student tier" book by Maimonides's own standards, he pretty much assumes you have the entire OT and Talmud more or less memorized, so it can be tough to get through if you don't have a thorough background in Judaica.


And you get pieces of that in the Gemara itself, but just due to the rambling nature of the texts, never really concentrated in any one area, just various arguments as to the nature of reality scattered hither and yon.

Because the latter doesn't really have any definitive summary. It is literally scattered arguments of rabbis over the course of about four hundred years, some of which touch upon the nature of reality. There's not even a definitive point reached, it's more like looking into a collection of debates.

For Guide, (and Maimonideac thought in general) you have an identification of the "soul" with the higher functions of the mind, and a series of assertions that Judaism is essentially an attempt at training the self into higher states of utilization of this mind/soul. When death comes, the soul is stripped of the body, and is catapulted into an existence of pure mind, which it might or might not be prepared for.

Essentially, a good life involves using the material aspect to help feed the higher function mind rather than the other way around.
