Karl Marx must have realized there is no such thing as a physical relation, all relations are metaphysical. So, stressing relations as paramount compared to the material, how was he a materialist?

Can you expand upon what exactly you mean by this point? Let's take the example "X is on top of Y"; what do you mean when you say that's a metaphysical relation?
