Quick quest, has the connotations of various facial expressions remained mostly the same for around the last 500 years or so?
If we were to analyse this picture using our interpretation, we would see a Voltaire, smug and sarcastic about the claims of the holiness, Roman-ness and imperial-ness of a certain political entity in Central Europe.
What would've contemporaries like Frederick the Great and Catherine the Great seen in this facial expression, however?

He has always been seen as smug and sarcastic, so we may reasonably suppose that his expression in this painting was meant to convey the same impression.
