>the honjo masamune
>one of the most famous swords in japanese history
>made by the greatest swordsmith to ever live
>passed down generation by generation for hundreds of years in the tokugawa shogunate's family line
>designated a national treasure of japan in 1939
>in 1945 japan loses the war and the occupation authorities order all swords to be handed over since they are 'weapons'
>many japanese protest against this
>tokugawa iemasa, the then owner of the honjo masamune, decides not to hide the sword but to voluntarily hand it over to the occupation authorities so as to set a good example to other japanese
>puts his whole trust in the inherent goodness of the americans and surrenders it to a police station along with a dozen other priceless swords
>the americans immediately lose the sword and then politely tell tokugawa to fuck off when he enquires about the valuation they were supposed to do on it (but didn't) to determine if it was to be spared
>most likely situation is that it was unceremoniously dumped in a furnace and melted down with hundreds of other swords
>other likely situation is that it was given to a random american serviceman as a trophy and is still sitting on some americans basement
>record actually exists of it being taken away from the police station by a sgt. coldy bimore but the name was written phonetically in japanese katakana script and there is no such person by that name
fucking piggus

Unfortunately Japanese swordsmanship was associated with right wing militarism by the US. This is not without some justification as kendo was basically used as a recruiting tool for the military.
the US therefore went out of its way to destroy many blades. Its very unfortunate in many ways

Kelly Johnson, in search of the proper metals for the airframe of the SR-71, got the CIA to make a shell company to import said material from the Soviet Union.

That's fucking dumb and I don't believe it without a source. The Soviet Union wasn't embargoed by the U.S. like Cuba. There was a lot of trade between the two countries despite the tensions. Usually grain and macro goods.
