Actually read a biography of Luther some time. He was kind of a miserable git. CONSTANTLY going to Confession for even minor sins, to the point that his confessor told him to cut it out. He was obsessed with sin and perfection. He was also not exactly the brightest of bulbs, so the two competing themes jammed together and we got Sola Fide. Then everything went to hell.
