Not him, but I have heard the Northerners tried to dig a tunnel beneath Southern lines and then go up attack them in the rear or something. As it turned out they lacked long enough ladders to get up though, so it was like shooting fish in a barrel for the Southerners.

Not OP, but during the ACW's main front in northern Virginia towards the end, you had proto-Western Front WW1 trench systems developing, long lines of field fortifications and it was damn tough to make any headway.
The Union tried to break the stalemate by undermining the Confederate trench system and detonating a huge bomb under a chunk of the line, and then attacking through the hole.
It was a good plan, but due to some considerable fucking up, the troops that were supposed to pour through and were trained to do so were reassigned, comparatively green guys got slated for the crater rush, and when it happened, they climbed into the bowl of the crater and just kind of milled around and got shot, turning the whole thing into a fiasco.
