Can someone tell me what the fuck was Pontus? Don't start with the memes, I know the basics. Mixed persian and greek heritage and all that.

But what was actually "Pontus"? Did pontian people exist? What ethnicity lived in the traditional capital of Amaseia and what actual ethnicity and culture was Mithridates maternal one? Was he just a persian/iranian like his name suggests?
