They were pretty sub-par overall. I mean, the only reason they were as successful as they were is because Allies were caught completely by surprise by the war in Europe and never expected that the japs would wage a major war against them since they were already into deep shit in China. Once the Allies got their shit together in mid 1942, they absolutely rekt them in land, air and sea and it was just a matter of time of mopping them up as they crept closer to Japanese home islands..
