Because liberal back then didn't mean what it means in the modern USA. In fact, in Europe it doesn't mean what it means in the modern USA either, liberals are in the right.

I've never heard napoleon described as a liberal in my entire life.
>>
>>1168022
He expanded liberalism to pretty almost all europe.
>>

Because he imposed a number of a very liberal reforms across the continent. He abolished serfdom, emancipated the Jews, an imposed the Napoleonic Code in place of more traditional patchwork feudal laws. He certainly wasn't liberal on the same level as the Jacobins, but he was a much more meritocratic force than the countries he was fighting.

Spreading liberalism with muskets doesn't make him less liberal. Specially not in the 19th century.
>>

>He abolished serfdom
He brought back slavery though.
>>

>>1168049
But that's not liberalism, even for that time.
>>
>>1168147
The first liberal state was the USA and they had slaves for a longer period than most western nations.
>>
>>1168011
Because labels like 'liberal' are completely unhelpful to describe political belief.
