I fail to see the intolerance for Shirer's work. He was a journalist who provided Americans what they wanted based on his experience in Berlin during the war and his subsequent research. Americans wanted a quick easy read (which it is) and Shirer provided it.

He was a radio correspondent for CBS in Berlin prior to US involvement in WWII. I have never considered it comprehensive research but it it far from "fan fiction". He was involved in covering WWII in real time and deserves his chance to tell the story (since no one had at the time).
