Italy is at the crossroad between slavs and spaniards, germans and bedouins. Anyone who speaks of a single italian race, or who tries to put all italians in a single racial category is going to have a difficult time proving their point.

venetians were latin populations escaping the slavs onto wooden platforms in the middle of a salty marsh

this is a pattern repeated in much of the mediterran, the invading people forcing the local population to escape into fortified island towns or othervise isolated and easily defended settlements

later they were all called by the same regionaly derived name, and probably intermixed a lot, enough to become one population, but the fact the vends became aculturated to venetian, latin culture is significant

they did not intermix as much in the rest of the adriatic tho, that was later when the republic was becoming empire like and there the relation was way more onesided, veneto speaking people mostly being colonisers and administration
