is retirement a modern concept?

In Hinduism you have the concept of Sannyasa, or renunciation. It is basically getting a new name, living off of charity, becoming some sort of Guru i nshit

However there were societies were one could enter some sort of retirement if you had money

I'd imagine in Confucian China and Vietnam, the filial piety thing would take over and children would care for their parents when they couldn't work anymore. At least that's how I've seen it in my family and my friends families.

Back when families lived together in multiple generation households, the elderly would look after kids, do small chores, bake bread and cakes and make jam and such

In Rome and Sparta when a aristocrat was old enough he was no longer in military service (though he usually does government duties afterwards).
