there wasnt really any eras of mass migration other than the chinese during the gold rushes, i think

plus, the south was always urban and densely populated and industrial because of the railroad while the north remained sparsely populated and rural

Some ridiculous amount of the population lives within 100 miles of the US border... it's like 50-75%. They're rich in resources but it's too cold to sustain large settlements of people.

There's not much in Northern Canada and not many people settled in Canada to begin with.

That's not true, there was a period of mass migration to the Prairies during the late 19th/early 20th C.

That's true but Canada didn't really encourage mass immigration to the prairie provinces until the the 1890s, giving the US a few decades head start in that respect. It didn't help that a good deal of arable land was until the end of the 19th Century in the hand of companies like Hudson's Bay Company that wasn't particularly looking to settle its lands.
