I'm flattered, but I think my shading needs a lot more work. As far as advice goes, and I rushed past a lot of this myself, I can think of:

1. Decide where light is coming from and shade accordingly (you can sketch out shadow lines beforehand to get an idea of this)
2. Start off with large strokes and shade the entire piece, then use a smaller and lighter brush to refine the shadows, then blend areas together for smoother surfaces
3. Avoid excessive blending
4. Around the outlines, you can use especially dark shades or strong highlights that follow the line
5. Keep the texture of the material in mind. Hair is shaded in strands, skin is smooth, cloth will have a lot of wrinkles, etc.
6. If shading is good, you should be able to tell the shape of something without the lineart (such as in a traditional painting, which has no outlines).
I am by no means an expert on shading.

Depending on the software you're using, different tools are best for shading. Paint Tool Sai is what I used for the colouring, and the watercolour tool is pretty great, since you can increase the blending as necessary to get a good range. Using the airbrush tool doesn't blend automatically, but if you want to invest the time it gives you more control over the piece. Really, you can use the airbrush tool for everything; sketching, lineart, shading, highlights, whatever.

I ended up having a very busy day and could barely work on deliveries, but here's a (very rough) WIP so you get the idea of what I'm working towards. Thank you for your patience, man.

Keep in mind that I'm going to completely redraw the mecha Gourai because I realised halfway through that it would look more natural if it wasn't bending at it's waist joint, which generally looks awkward with mechs. It'll take some time as there's a serious lack of top down views of the Gourai. If you happen to own the model, a photo of it lying on it's back would be really wonderful.

Also, I'm not sure on which armor pieces to omit on the girls (Gourai and Kai for simplicity), so I'll let you pick what you prefer. With Jinrai I omitted the shoulderpads, which again sort of get in the way, so I'm thinking of omitting them at least for Gourai. I'm also thinking that I could leave her chestplate on, unless you prefer the look shown in the WIP. There's also the lower-back block, not very visible on Kai but in plain sight for Gourai; sould I leave it or omit it?

Some drawfags want: details of characters with official art to know the clothes, the body, and other details to make the work more easy; the request being detailed and not "draw this with this please"; and sometimes all references in one pic.
And some request have characters that drawfags are not familiar with it and they rather draw somebody that they know.

Yeah, obviously people need references to draw. I'm asking if other drawfags actually want it all in single huge inconvenient image (and if the request doesn't have that they'll skip it), or is this just some assumption the requesters have made?

I mean, personally I prefer a more simple request image that doesn't take over ten seconds to download. I just want to quickly know what the character looks like so I can decide whether I want to draw them or not, and if I do I'm going to google the character anyway and gather refs in PureRef or something.

Of course it's a bit of a different matter if the refs would be difficult to find otherwise.

Not the one you're replying to, but I prefer having at least one reference that shows the characters for franchises I'm less familiar with, it avoids mistaking characters for one another (especially when multiple characters share a name or have similar ones).
I usually do research on my own, but I might not be aware or have access to some useful ressource such as a particular artbook. Or their Google-Fu just isn't that strong.
Also, if they want a particular sort of pose (without asking for the exact same pose), a picture gets the point across.
None of these are hard rules for me, if I'm not clear on something I just ask the requester and sometimes I've been given references by requesters that were better than what I had dug up.

It's not hard to assume that some drawfags are really hard on the requests, be it because they don't have a lot of time and it will be easy to just have it in one pic, or because they are jerks (literal jerk). Regardless of the reason, there are drawfags like that.

It really depends on the drawfags, some want to have all of them on one pic, and there are others like you. Also, all drawfag has their own method to choose and draw, and if they don't feel like drawing, they will not draw.

I'm planning to stay in these threads (and /d/'s) for the long run and deliver sort of regularly, though.
It doesn't guarantee that I'll do a delivery, but then again I wouldn't accept a commision for something I wouldn't enjoy drawing and the criteria would be the same I take requests with.
So feel free to post requests. There's better artists than me on the threads (Standby is fucking godly), so you might even hit the jackpot.

A word of advice would be that variety is the spice of life. I tend to wait some time before doing a second delivery involving the same character or similar situations unless it compels me enough (your delivery is a good example of that) or I took those requests around the same time. Not wasting discarded sketches and other various reasons also lead to exceptions. I'm pretty inconsistent with that.

That ended up quite lenghty. Hopefully I didn't come off as pretencious or something. Lack of sleep makes me verbose.

That is just one of many things I enjoy. Surely I jump at the chance to do that (very little material around), but I would by no means restrict my pool of potential requests to just that.
I also enjoy much more mundane things, actually I don't think there's much on /h/ I'm completely against drawing.
I mostly choose requests related to franchises I know. I can't list them all (poor memory) and I'm not sure if you would find it helpful if I listed some of them.
