I'll do a version with heart pupils, it's an idea that needs to be seen to determine whether it's good or not.
Usually I do pay a lot of atention. I know from experience that requests are rarely granted and drawfriends tend to ignore requests that have already been granted, so I prefer to get as close to the requester's wishes as I can/want.
It's both so the requester is happy with the delivery and the satisfaction of a job well done. The fact that it makes me practice drawing also comes into play.

There is no shame in using references, both photographic or drawn. Studying how other persons draw certain things can help you learn how to draw them. Just don't trace, it's rude. [spoiler] I've traced photos for usage as a guideline for complex angles though. [/spoiler]

I might know how you feel.
My father is a damn good amateur painter with classical instruction whose paintings decorate the family house, has ungodly skills on pen drawing, does cartoon style drawings with noteworthy skills and did about half of our city's air base's patch designs. And he can do all of that from imagination. The only reason he didn't go pro was that his family pressured him to become an officer.
My sister, who started drawing around the same time I did (she taught me, more or less), takes after him and draws with little difficulty either digitally or on paper, as well as having the creativity to back it up. The only reason she uses references is for really fancy clothing and the like.
It was fucking hard getting where I am and the transition to digital drawing (forced out of practicality) was a horrible experience and I had to relearn from scratch to get back to the skill I had before. Which I only did recently because I stopped drawing for months due to my wounded pride. A lesson in humility, I guess. I'm still afraid of coloring though. And I can't draw from imagination. On top of that, my creativity is quite dry, so I lurk drawthreads to pick requests for practice.

I know that feeling all too well. I did a quick/poorly explained mock up but basically you really want to pay close attention to the proportions of the human figure (female specifically for this case) and how they behave in correlation with perspective (see the upper left example). In this case it is 3 point perspective so certain features will be larger/more visible than others. To help grab whatever references you can to help out but don't be a slave to them (copying/tracing 100%). Anyone ever gives you shit for that point to Norman Rockwell and Leyendecker who also heavily used constructed references. Also are you using a tablet or mouse and keyboard? If tablet then do gesture drawings and warmups so that your lines are more confident. If mouse and keyboard then you could do drawings in a sketchbook and scan them if you have a printer/scanner and play around with the pen tool in "free" programs you happen to "find". Also if you have extra scratch even a cheap bamboo fun will only cost around roughly $60 bucks even cheaper if you look used. Hope that helps.

Hard to say something then. Unfortunately it honestly looks like you're 100% symbol drawing. Just study by drawing actual people from reference. Might be the easiest to do it with a pencil rather than a tablet.

Author here, it looks pretty good.
My nitpicks would be that you don't seem to have smoothed over the autopicker's errors, resulting in the clear lines besides the lining, mainly on Grey. But that might be the shades of grey from the lineart messing with transparency.
Other areas (most noticeable on the ZX helmet and Pandora's hair) could use some eraser touch-ups because the color spilled over.
On the colors themselves, you missed a part of Vent's bodysuit right above the belt, coloring it in white. You also colored the highlights in Vent's and Grey's eyes, which looks sort of weird to me. Pandora's back was meant to be grey, but it does look like her skin is exposed in the lineart, so I won't nitpick about the colour if you prefer it like this.
Overall, it's a good job! Certainly more pleasing to the eye than a simple lineart.

I use sai when I can. Basic tips I can remember for shading would be don't blur too much, decide where the light's coming from and maybe plan out the shadows on a different layer. Specific to sai it might help to hit preserve opacity on the layer to very quickly make sure you don't shade outside the lines and I recommend using either the watercolour or a small airbrush if you're more confident. I have respect if you managed to get that done with gimp, I couldn't stand the program myself.

Honestly I think my shading right now is kind of messy and low-quality. If you're trying out different techniques I would recommend just cell shading (e.g. Standby's pictures) since you don't need to worry about blending and it often looks a lot cleaner and more striking.
