Not only do you need someone to translate, which, surprise; not everyone is a master of 日本語.

Secondly you need someone to remove or alter (scrub) the original text and then fit the new text to the image.

Keep in mind that this is usually a team of people like 4-6 (I skipped a few processes), so it has to change hands multiple times before it's actually ready.

Finally, it's not a paying job afaik, so it comes second to actual real life shit.

For a 20 pages long chapter with normal amount of text and sfx-es:

An experienced translator usually needs at least an hour to translate it all.
An experienced editor takes at least 2-3 hours to clean, redraw and typeset it all.
Add at least 30 minutes for quality checking and revisions.
Total: 3.5 to 4.5 hours a chapter

It will take much more time if:
>The number of people involved in translating/editing increases
>They slack off or not dedicated enough to do it in one go.
>They have not enough experience to do their jobs effectively and efficiently.
>The amount of texts and sfx-es are larger than normal.
>There's a lot of revisions from the QC'ers
>etc

This is all assuming you want a quality translation, not CR-tier crap translation.

Obviously you're not paying attention to the editing job, different typesetting and all that shit. If everyone just translated Japanese to English using the same font and size for all the pages, it'd look like a huge pile of trash to read.

There's also the cleaning job that takes some work. You can't just put a white rectangle over a box to hide it, sometimes you have to clean it properly and even redraw in some cases. QC has to revise several times too.

If you just sat down, pick a random doujin and try to clean all the boxes and redo a REAL typesetting of everything, you'd see it can EASILY take 10 hours. And that's if that artist is generous with the SFX.

Also most of the time it's not commission work so they work for free. It's a hobby, not their main occupation.

As someone who actually does this stuff alone, it can take a fucking long time depending on the content.

There are easy manga (big text bubbles with lots of room for text, barely anything or nothing outside of the bubbles, barely any or no cleaning required because of a good scan, relatively simple text) that can be done within the space of 2-3 hours all up (translate->clean->typeset->proofread can take as little as 5 minutes per page on average, sometimes). I've _done_ something like this translating on the fly on /h/ before.

But then there's manga with 10 speech bubbles on most pages, lots of text outside of boxes that requires massive amounts of redrawing, dodgy scans that require a decent bit of cleaning, low-res scans or tiny spaces to fit large amounts of text in... These are a fucking nightmare, unless you're one of those lazy editors that just whites out the background on everything and doesn't give a flying fuck about proper typesetting or typos and shit.

And that's not even going into some of the finer points of translating, like thinking about how best to translate certain words, phrases, sounds, specific theme-related terminology and even just names/titles that don't flow well into English, on top of just generally revising something so it sounds more natural in English.

A lot of the stuff that gets pumped out quickly is the easy stuff. On the other end of the spectrum, there's artists who rarely get touched because anything they do takes an insanely long time to properly edit.

Oh, and I also tend not to touch stuff that just got released or is by an artist that some other translator seems to be going through. I imagine there's a fair few translators who also have this mentality, but that means some stuff just gets overlooked (even apart from the fact that there's just soooooo much shit out there to choose from).

Even without a team, each step takes time.

Translating takes more or less time given one's level in Japanese and the words/way of speaking used by the author.

Erasing text in bubbles is easy but if you have 20-30 bubbles in a page ( you know, all those "ah!"), it can be a bit long. And erasing text outside of bubbles can be really time consuming if the drawing beneath is complex.

Then you place your text in the bubbles. You have to adjust the size and keep consistency with the japanese version. If they're different fonts in japanese, better have different fonts in your own language and if possible with the same feeling. Again, if they're a lot of bubbles in a page, it can take quite some time. And don't forget the bubbles are made for vertical writing, not horizontal.

Last, you need to reread and make the translation feel as smooth as possible in your own langage without betraying the author intent.
I know, it's just porn, but cultural differences are real.
