So far every single prominent artist I checked is AT LEAST in his mid-late 30s with their personal websites and blogs all being created in late 90s-early 00s. Although it does make sense in my personal case since my tastes were forming back in 2008-2010.

With literal thousands of artists trying to sell their stuff I can only imagine that becoming a relatively young non-starving ero manga artist is either the matter of extreme talent or extreme luck. Such a stark contrast with western segment where it seems like being merely assed to draw comics while not being complete mspaint-tier trash automatically warrants you enough patreon dosh to sustain yourself.

Well, it is pretty uncommon for working class parents to send their kids into art schools regardless of where you are. And I would by no means imply that these people "are only popular because of their rich daddies" or anything like that.

Shindol has dozens of finished pieces behind his back and, as an artist, you can clearly see that he has been putting a LOT of care into them ever since he started. There are lots of artists who are as popular or even more popular who don't bother with stuff like proper backgrounds, extreme angles, advanced composition, detailed anatomy etc. You may not even notice all that stuff as a consumer but he really does all that shit.

But alas, the "New-York dude drawing rape n'shit in Japan" is still a complete bullshit.

There is an issue of the language barrier and the fact that japanese tend to respect the common courtesy of not trying to dig into someone else's life but they aren't exactly in hiding either. You could easily see most of them at conventions they participate in.

I'm not sure whether they hire said assistants on their own or they are provided to them by publishers for specific works but that's definitely the case with all artists who publish a lot of high quality content.

There simply is no way for an artist to produce, say, a 200 page tank AND a bunch of doujins/magazine commissions every couple of years without a help.

I identify as one of those people who can only seem to be artistic when drawing or creating sexual imagery. I'd love to make more and create for the perv masses, but it's really hard to make the time when you spend most of the time trying to support yourself through a shit job. Getting your work seen to even start a following is surprisingly difficult. Does anyone know of any good places other than pixiv to get some exposure? Pixiv is useless unless you are either on the top tier professional illustrator level or are close to it and your work just happens to appeal to it's demographic. Being a stupid gaijin who can't into moon does not help either. And if your style does not adhere to the anime rules then you may as well quit.

Tumblr is great for exposure since there are lots of legit people who monitor tags and doing popular characters regularly can give you huge exposure right away. That is if the art is actually good enough to appeal to such numbers.

Twitter seems to be the platform of choice for a lot of big dicks these days but it's not an art platform and people who are huge on it either get constant retweets from other popular people due to connections or funnel all their followers from other social media to it.

Hentaifoundry is garbage but still probably the best place to start off if you want to get some money for your subpar smut.

Ultimately, there really is no reason to not just post your shit everywhere.

And don't expect any of the people who might follow to motivate you through critique. You are more likely to get praise for complete garbage trash from autists with no standards and beggars than a proper critique on social media. That's just how it works.

Any artist working on a weekly jump comic has assistants, usually multiple assistants if the comic is a very popular title.

As for doujinshi, most artists don't have assistants, but many of the more popular artists DO have somewhat casual assistants, often other up-and-coming artists looking to learn from them. ALL of the circles who have wall tables will have assistants for selling at the event. They just physically can't process the volume of people who want to buy their comics without assistants.

I think it applies to all extra popular artists. You may not be able to tell the difference between, say, Pija and Inoue unless you are exceptionally familiar with their works but you will always recognize, say, Butcha's longface even if the porn itself is rather mediocre in both art and intensity compared to formers.

I don't think that is entirely fair towards him. I mean it would make sense for a kid from an american-japanese family to be pretty wealthy out of the crib but If you look at the release dates, both Bestiaries and Appends, duh, were released right after TSF got finished and published and TSF was definitely his best selling work. By a wide margin too. AND it got it's own anime.

I think it's safe to say that he could definitely afford to hire all those guys on his own. Especially considering that he most likely made money he spent on them back anyways.

I mean, look at Henshin. It sold very poorly and, coincidentally, Append 4 was the first one to not feature any guest artists whatsoever.

There is this yearly toranoana store rating that japanese seem to respect somewhat. It does not feature all the books and henshin is still, like, 25th on it. For the record: TSF was somewhere between top 3 and top 5.

It's also not even in top 100 on the amazon's annual ratings. His last 3 books before henshin broke that with ease.

And the reason I checked in the first place was because people on 2chan told just that and I could not believe it, considering all the memes and discussion it created.

Maybe it was not a complete flop but it's still abysmall not only compared to his previous books but also considering the fact that he is an already established artist with a big name and that it is a single story 250 page tank with no filler and the best art quality he has ever done.

It's also likely to be the story he wanted to tell the most ever since he started. Just look how much it mirrors his early works like Four Leaf Lover.

I think it's greatest issue was that it was porn with a deeply depressing plot. I think this book is an achievement (in the same way Bondage Game and Starless were) and a niche classic for what it is trying to do but overall it's below average on all aspects except for art.

Try it out and see if it's fun. Keep anatomy/perspective books as reference and start doing a mix of figure drawing and drawing for fun.

Start a folder where you put inspiring images (porn drawings, sexy real life models or whatever you like). You can always go back to that folder when you're not sure what to draw, or how to draw a thing in an appealing way.

If you've never drawn before you'll have to accept that it'll take a while until you can draw appealing stuff. There are easier things to draw than humans. On the other hand, if you keep having fun and stay curious you'll get there before you realize it
